Competition remains fierce for VC dollars, and the 2013 Venture Capital 100 winners have brought strong products forward, creating vibrant new companies and invaluable new services. With the mobile world still dominating the technology marketplace, both business and consumer users are being treated to plenty of choices in terms of products and services.
Other legacy institutions such as healthcare are expanding into the technology datasphere as quickly as apps can be built. New security applications are emerging that do far more than regulate traffic. These stalwart, efficient services can now protect valuable data without hindering communication. And behind it all the cloud-public, private, and hybrid-is providing a robust backbone for deployment and storage.
Strengthening the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem
The VC100 winners represent an amazing range of expertise-mobile, cloud, on-demand, SaaS, advertising, digital entertainment, infrastructure. They are seeking out the best the entrepreneurial community has to offer, ensuring that the very best ideas have their chance to become successful, sustainable, profitable companies.
AlwaysOn editors compiled the 2013 VC 100 with help from our research partners at Morgan Stanley. The winning venture capitalists were selected based on total number and dollar amounts of successful
M&A and IPO deals during the last two years (October 1, 2011 through September 30, 2013) from their portfolio companies. We acknowledge that our editors were not privy to the valuations paid by investors at each respective financing round, so this list is based upon our best educated estimation.
Congratulations to this year’s Venture Capital 100 winners. Backed by the people on this lies, the top venture capital funded technology companies continue to bring new, innovative products, services, and applications to the world. As the strength of the Global Silicon Valley flourishes, the opportunities for this year’s winners remain limitless.

For years, the editors at AlwaysOn have been spreading the word about the Global Silicon Valley, and one of the hottest trends during the last several years is the establishment of entrepreneurial communities outside the traditional confines of Silicon Valley in Northern California. One of the most lucrative startup markets is in New York City, and this year’s Venture Capitalist of the Year, Fred Wilson, exemplifies what characterizes the New York venture scene-tenacity coupled with the uncanny ability to re-create and re-invent itself in the face of daunting odds.
Early in his venture investing career, Mr. Wilson and his partner Jerry Colonna founded Flatiron Partners (named after the famed NYC district). The year was 1996, and as we now know, the dot-com bubble was expanding at an alarming rate. Flatiron put NYC venture funding on the map, with its many successes and failures. Like a lot of high flyers during that heady time, the fund shut down in 2001, with Mr. Wilson and Mr. Colonna managing the remainder of its portfolio.
Along with many VCs who experienced the devastation of the dot-com collapse, hindsight taught the members of the technology community some hard lessons about the entrepreneurial rollercoaster. Bloodied, but unbowed, Mr. Wilson began anew with partner Brad Burnham, founding Union Square Ventures in 2004. Union Square Ventures handles primarily early-stage investments, focusing on young technology companies in the media, marketing, financial services, mobile, and healthcare markets.
Mr. Wilson and his partners at Union Square have many notable exits to their credit, including Foursquare, Meetup, Zynga, del.icio.us, Etsy, FeedBurner, Heyzap, Indeed.com, Tacoda, Disqus, and Clickable. In 2013, the fund’s major exits included Twitter, Tumblr, and LendingClub. Twitter was 2013’s largest IPO, raising $2.1 billion in November. Union Square was one of several investors that participated in Twitter’s Series A in mid-2007. The firm also participated in its B and C rounds in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Union Square benefitted from its $24.5 billion valuation, along with other savvy investors who saw the potential of this “tiny” app back in 2006.
Mr. Wilson has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from MIT and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. His blog, AVC, is extremely popular, inviting comment on many topics that are affecting the venture industry and innovation community today. Never one to shy away from controversy, his discussions attract comments from VCs from all corners of the Global Silicon Valley, and offer advice to entrepreneurs who think they’re ready to take the step into the venture funding world.
The immediate future is an entrepreneur’s market. New technology sectors are opening up almost more rapidly than innovators can respond. The venture industry is shaking itself up, as more front-end, early-stage options abound. As the competition for venture capital tightens, you can be sure that Mr. Wilson and his partners at Union Square will be on the forefront of helping the most successful ideas become the most successful businesses.
